It's after Marc-André Leclerc's fizzled first attempt to climb Torre Egger in Patagonia (Argentina), an experience so punishing that anyone in their right mind would say, "Okay, I tried, let's move on," that The Alpinist (2021), a movie by climb documentary specialists Peter Mortimer and Nick Rosen, puts a claw in your heart.
Leclerc, the movie's Kamikaze climbing star, indeed takes a second-run at the terrifying vertical crag of Planet Earth that more resembles an upright dagger than a mountain. Not only does this young man not think, feel, or make decisions like you or I do, but he's a junkie going after a serious fix. Now on Netflix. Recommended.
