So looking forward to viewing the California African American Museum’s latest exhibition, “A Memoir in Movement,” dedicated to the great dance/theater/visual arts couple Carmen de Lavallade and Geoffrey Holder, an exhibit comprising photographs, paintings, sculptures, and costume designs. De Lavallade, a Los Angeles native, is a living dance treasure whose legacy ports names like Lester Horton, Alvin Ailey, and Jack Cole. She married Holder, the actor-dancer-designer, in 1955. CAAM’s ‘artist’s talk’ with De Lavallade (Holder will appear by video) represents a rare opportunity to experience in person this extraordinary woman of dance.
This exhibit, coming nearly four years after CAAM’s marvelous “Dance Theatre of Harlem: 40 Years of Firsts” positions the California African American Museum at the forefront of visual-arts treatments of this most ephemeral art form amongst museums in our city.
