This wonderful photo by Carrie Schneider, reminiscent of Jerome Robbins’s mise-en-scene for “West Side Story,” comes courtesy of the Laguna Dance Festival. The annual dance fest on the cusp of its 12th season presents Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion as one of three programs on offer the weekend of September 22. Abraham’s troupe joins BODYTRAFFIC and BalletX on the Festival’s rich three-company roster.
The September showcases give an opportunity to view Abraham’s company of wonderful ‘hip-hop-and-more’-inspired dancers. It’s the last chance to see the highly lauded “Pavement” before the piece is retired. So, go!
Inspired by John Singleton’s movie “Boyz n the Hood,” “Pavement” is especially relevant to the kinds of cultural conversations and outright warfare the nation is going through concerning relationships between police and residents of color in low-income neighborhoods. The hour-long work, which spools to music by Ryuichi Sakamoto, Bach, Benjamin Britten and Sam Cooke, is set in Pittsburgh’s Homewood and Hill District neightborhoods near to where Abraham had his roots.
Kyle will also teach a masterclass on the stage of the Laguna Playhouse on Wednesday Sept 21 — a rare opportunity to gain exposure to one of the best and most original dancers of our era.
If you haven’t rolled down Laguna Way, now’s the time. Make a day of it.

This will be an exciting start to the Laguna Dance Festival! It marks the first time Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion has appeared in Orange County, and one of the last opportunities to catch “Pavement” before the piece is retired.
