Los Angeles Philharmonic: Adieu, Esa-Pekka Salonen! 6

Music

esa pekka salonen

Friday night I watched Esa-Pekka Salonen conduct the LA Phil for perhaps my last time. Esa has had a huge impact on my life, as I entered the symphony world under his tutelage. He is retiring as the Phil’s conductor after this season. Renowned for his special touch with 20th century music, he conducted Stravinsky and Bartok in the concert Friday. The Bartok piece, Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta, was so wonderful. Such exquisite sound, no where as extraordinary as in the Disney Concert Hall.

[correction: several commenters note that EPS remains with the Phil for one additional final season.  my error. / DL]

Personal comments on the LA scene (mostly) that are fun to read in a snowbound farmhouse in Western Montana with the wind howling outside this toasty haven.

What about gathering comments from some of your interviewees?

Deb, I am in Finland frequently. Do you think it will be a chance to see him in his home country?
