One of the most original dance voices in our lifetime. Currently writing a piece about Bob Fosse and how he used to go to the movies and then run home as fast as he could to try and recreate what he saw with today’s media opportunities, we can watch, freeze, rewind and replicate movement. Reading about dance in Bollywood, Japan, Korea, France and nearly all of the world, entire generations of dancers have learned how to express themselves. I think that Michael Jackson, James Brown and Elvis Presley are those original dance voices, moving from a unique source. Try to replicate Balanchine? I don’t think so. Jackson, Brown, Presley and Fosse? You bet.
When I saw your title I heard it to the tune of The Smiths song “The Death of a Disco Dancer” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvbCu49lH2Q
Feels appropriately melancholic.
