Our friends at Hollywood Heritage have invited us to attend an event at the Lasky-DeMille historic film-making “barn” on Highland Avenue, across from the Hollywood Bowl. They entreat us to join them at the Fair – the 1903 Louisiana Purchase Exposition that is – Wednesday night offering up Old Hollywood holiday cheer celebrating Judy Garland and her classic film MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS (1944) directed by Vincente Minnelli.
The evening, honoring the film’s 80th anniversary will include an appearance by special guest, Judy Garland’s son Joey Luft, a display of Judy Garland’s iconic costumes and memorabilia from beloved musical MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS, plus a special presentation of clips from the film and a documentary about it.
Beyond Garland’s sensational presence in this picture — by turns sappy, sweet, commanding and firey — MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS was such an important film in the career of MGM producer/songwriter Arthur Freed. It galvanized an informal cluster of back-of-camera creatives known as the Freed Unit. Separately, the movie was made while its director and leading lady were in the honeymoon phase of their marriage.
Let’s get together a fete this wondrous movie and celebrate Joey Loft’s incredible Mom.
