Please don’t say the U.S. government does not support the arts.
We have art stamps. Or is it stamp art?
The postal service launched the Abstract Expressionist postage stamp series in March. See them here.
I just got mine. They’re very groovy. Just the thing to smack on my late tax return.
The vibrant stamps feature works by Hans Hofmann, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Barnett Newman, Robert Motherwell, Adolph Gottlieb, Arshile Gorky, Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock and Joan Mitchell.
For me, it’s a good excuse to post a Hans Hofman image on arts·meme. So dazzling! Berkeley Art Museum owns a brilliant cluster of Hofman’s paintings. He taught at U.C. Berkeley as well as at Chouinard School of Art here in L.A.
I’m interested in learning more about Gorky the Armenian. MOCA is hosting an upcoming retrospective [show is now at the Tate Modern; coming to Los Angeles this summer.]
Jack Rutberg Fine Arts has a show of Gorky’s sketchbook drawings opening May 22.
