So good! Classic cartoons on Hollywood Legion Theater big screen

Film
WE’RE ON OUR WAY TO RIO (1945, J. Tyler/I. Sparber)
Popeye and Bluto, on shore leave, visit Rio and fall in love with a bewitching Samba dancer, in this beautifully produced musical cartoon. Her name? Olive Oyl.

So good! The 10th edition of the Alex Film Society’s The Greatest Cartoons Ever! to spool at the most wonderful new single screen theater in Los Angeles, the refurbished the Hollywood Legion Theater on Highland Avenue, where truly there is not a bad seat in the house.

The afternoon screening features tributes to animation pioneers Tex Avery and Dave Fleischer, and cartoon characters Bugs Bunny, Popeye & Olive Oyl and Woody Woodpecker, plus a special appearance by Superman, curated by animation historians Jerry Beck and Frank Gladstone. The latter two will give remarks during the program which is co-produced by the Alex Film Society, the Hollywood Legion Theater and Hollywood Heritage

I’ve cherry picked two more of the goodies below.

HA! HA! HA! (1934, D. Fleischer).
Koko gets a toothache and Betty Boop, taking on the role of a dentist, gives KoKo a dose of laughing gas.
TERROR ON THE MIDWAY (1942, D. Fleischer)
Great use of animation, camera technique and lighting to tell a “King Kong-esque” story.

Could I possibly make this event more appealing? Let me try. Free parking across the street from the theater — at the Hollywood Heritage parking lot. If you are with kids, please be careful crossing Highland Avenue? Protect our children! … and enjoy!
