The expansive and influential career of Hans Burkhardt (1904–1994), who constantly updated and reinvented as a painter in Los Angeles is the focus of a survey exhibition of paintings and drawings, “Hans Burkhardt: Within & Beyond the Mainstream.”
In the video, gallerist Rutberg notes, with certain contained astonishment, that Burkhardt, who transferred to L.A. after almost a decade working side by side in New York with Arshile Gorky, and who became one of L.A.’s biggest creative producers, decade in and out, has kind of gone missing. This despite leaving behind a deep footprint from decades of output and exhibitions.
“Within & Beyond the Mainstream” is part of the Getty Research Institute’s initiative Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945 — 1980.
