Author James Gavin, who penned “Stormy Weather: The Life Of Lena Horne” will explore the life and career of a legendary superstar as part of Black History month February 13. The fun and informative event will take place at The Barn, with all the barn animals.
Lena Horne was one of the great entertainers of the twentieth century. A woman of great beauty, commanding stage presence, and uber-left-wing politics, she performed in nightclubs, concert halls, movies, and on radio and television. The evening will include rare film and television clips of Ms. Horne and the author will be signing copies of his book after the program.
Stormy Weather is such a great movie, both for Horne and for the fabulous “Jumpin’ Jive” number by the Nicholas Brothers, with Cab Calloway and his formidable orchestra. Laemmle Theatres is screening Stormy Weather as the first of a “A Joyful Noise,” a wonderful Black-History-month film series at the theater chain’s NoHo outlet. Films include: Stormy Weather, The Wiz, School Daze, and Dreamgirls. Those latter three films bear a re-see as well.
