These stunning sculptures will be displayed starting next Saturday at Leslie Sacks Fine Art in Brentwood in an exhibition comprising nearly 60 pieces from the gallerist’s personal collection. The exhibition marks the publication of a hardbound catalogue of the Leslie Sacks collection of African art, soon to be released by international publishing house Skira.
A talk with the catalogue’s editor, Amanda Maples, and Dr. Marla C. Berns, Director of the Fowler Museum at UCLA, begins at 6 pm the evening of the opening reception.
The book’s 38 essays were contributed by 20 noted scholars in the field of African art. These writings alongside olor photography by Donald Cole address subjects ranging from cultural and historical analyses of the objects to issues of indigenous African aesthetics and the relationship of African art to modern and contemporary European and American art of the 20th century.
