So glad to see the Academy keeping the memory of John Garfield alive. It’s really great, Julie, that you got to describe to the people watching “Body and Soul” that night the connection between your father’s integrity as a person, in his own struggles against the blacklist, and the work he put into this film. Good for you.

Those were my years, too – dancing in Paris, Berlin, and Zurich – and avoiding the CIA as much as possible.

Met Jack Cole in LA in the ‘seventies when he taught at UCLA until two weeks before his passing. What a trooper! He wouldn’t tell students, wanted no pity, and we – the faculty – were almost killed by them when he died.
Never hesitated to tell me how much he and Miss Ruth disliked Mary Wigman – did imitations of her (in the early 30s) for me in the hallway, just to get my goat. Me? I just laughed – Mary would have been pleased to be remembered at all!

I had no idea that Cole was ever at The Pillow but it stands to reason because of his early affiliation with Denishawn. Thank you so much for publishing this photograph which is positively iconic!

I love how you get all this historical info and photos! Will you be jettisoned to Becket for the JC Commemerative??

Also, I read a recent NY Times review of “Fondly We Hope . . .” which acknowledges a trimmed-down piece but refers to the work as a bit pedantic. Ah, NY critics, what do they know?
