It is exciting to share ideas, feelings and observations with a savvy audience about a master of cinematic dance. That’s Jack Cole, whom I have been researching, writing and giving talks about for eight years.

jack_coleheadshotWhere better place to pay tribute to this influential, mid-century American artist than The Museum of Modern Art? And that we shall do, in an historic 18-film retrospective curated by Dave Kehr, one of our nation’s top writer/cineastes.

The entire retrospective will be dolloped with conversation, celebrity interviews and, I anticipate, a good deal of joy and discovery for the audience.

My talk, an illustrated lecture featuring superb, proprietary imagery courtesy of MoMA and The Academy of Dance on Film, is entitled “All That Jack,” and will be offered twice. The first outing, Saturday, January 23, 4 pm, will feature guest contributor Carmen de Lavallade.

In a reprise of the talk Monday, January 25, 4 pm, the veteran dancer/choreographer Grover Dale brings his deep understanding of Cole’s contribution to the conversation.

[As for the lady in the pink dress, pictured above, her little movie, GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES (1953), will be introduced by director/choreographer Rob Marshall, one of many contemporary film makers enthralled by Jack Cole’s ground breaking but under-appreciated camera-capture of dance.]

Please join in for MoMA’s splendid two-week screening event. If you attend the talk, please come say hello!

Thank you, Darlene, I would love to produce the retrospective in Los Angeles, but so far, I do not have a presenter lined up. Thank you for the note.

This is going to be phenomenal. I wish I were going to be in NY during that time.. I’d go on both dates just to hear what Carmen de Lavillade, Grover Dale and Chita Rivera say about Jack Cole. What an amazing opportunity! Will the film be shown anywhere else in the country?
