Last June, I had the unspeakable joy of being the writer on the bus of Lula Washington Dance Theater’s three-week tour of China, primarily in Henan Province. It was a spectacular, gargantuan life experience. What added art to the journey was the band of gypsies also on the bus: Marcus Miller and the Freedom Jazz Movement. Live music was part of every performance, whether separately or backing the dancers. What a paradise.
